Beijing IP Court White Paper on 10 Years of Judicial Work

The Beijing Intellectual Property Court issued a White Paper on the 10 Years of Trial Work of the Beijing Intellectual Property Court (2014-2024), which provides information on court’s trial work, typical cases, and adjudication rules.

The Beijing Intellectual Property Court was established on November 6, 2014. By October 2024, the court had accepted a total of 201,984 cases and concluded 195,506 cases, covering the entire field of IP rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, unfair competition, as well as anti-monopoly issues.

In the decade since its establishment, the Court has handled over 36,000 foreign-related intellectual property cases, involving parties from more than 100 countries and regions, with foreign-related cases accounting for nearly 20% of all cases handled.

The White Paper notes that the court has increased number of cases where punitive damages were imposed with the aim of effectively deterring infringements as well as stimulating innovation and creativity. Since its establishment, the court has applied punitive damages in 16 cases, with an average judgment amount of RMB 12.3 million (US$1.7 million), with one case resulting in an award of RMB 70.56 million (US$10 million).
