Dr. Wang is the managing partner for the firm’s Silicon Valley Office.  He joined Beijing East IP in 2016 and is leading the firm’s U.S. operations.

Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Wang practiced law in Silicon Valley for ten years as an in-house general counsel at an Intel-backed software startup and a top global technology company (2010-2016), and as an associate attorney with Wilson Sonsini and Dewey & LeBoeuf (2006-2010).  Prior to practicing in Silicon Valley, Dr. Wang interned for Judge Randall R. Rader at the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. (2006), and gained patent prosecution experience in Minneapolis with Fish & Richardson (2005).

Before embarking on a career in law, Dr. Wang conducted in-depth scientific research, including projects under the supervision of Dr. Judith Kimble (former President of the Genetics Society of America and Society for Developmental Biology) and Dr. Marvin Wickens (former President of the RNA Society) at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Dr. Wang’s research was published in the world-renowned journal Nature in relation to his discovery of a family of enzymes essential for germline and embryonic development, the function of brain, and the translational control of gene expression.  As an undergraduate researcher, Dr. Wang studied molecular enzymology under the guidance of Dr. Hai-Meng Zhou at Tsinghua University.

Dr. Wang lives in Palo Alto with his wife and children. In his spare time, he enjoys jogging in the serene midtown neighborhood, hiking at the Stanford Dish, hanging out with friends, and sightseeing in the San Francisco Bay Area with his family.

Work Highlights

  • Defended SMIC against TSMC (represented by Keker & Van Nest) in a bet-the-company billion-dollar trade secrets/breach of contract case involving semiconductor device fabrication technologies: drafted document requests, interrogatories, and discovery responses; conducted document review; assisted offensive and defensive depositions; worked on expert declarations on ion implantation and design rules; defeated Motion for Preliminary Injunction by TSMC.
  • Defended Affymetrix against MIT and E8 Pharmaceuticals) in a patent infringement case involving hundreds of millions of dollars of damages claims: managed all aspects of the case from the initial disclosure to the close of fact discovery; formulated claim construction and case strategies; ; prepared fellow attorneys for depositions; won Motion to Dismiss at the District Court and judgment of non-infringement at the Federal Circuit.
  • Represented leading technology company in an FCPA investigation initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice.
  • Avoided an AAA arbitration and resolved a licensing dispute with Eastman Kodak Company involving millions of dollars of claims for overpaid royalties; recovered over half a million dollars in unpaid royalties from a top PC and device manufacturer through AAA arbitration.
  • Prosecuted and managed U.S. and foreign patent and trademark applications; managed a portfolio of hundreds of patents, patent applications, trademarks, and trademark applications.
  • Provided legal counseling to hundreds of researchers in various high-tech labs atthe U.S. R&D Center of Samsung Electronics conducting cutting-edge research and development of products and services such as wearables, digital health, mobile platforms and applications, mobile security, big data intelligence, cloud computing, media solutions, smart TVs, set-top box, audio, IoT, user experience, wireless communications, and medical devices, on issues such as intellectual property, open source, and privacy.
  • Drafted and negotiated agreements including content licenses, consulting agreements, sponsored research agreements, material transfer agreements, business associate agreements, and collaboration agreements with universities such as MIT and Harvard, and hospitals such as Kaiser and MGH.
  • Provided legal support and overall project management for the US$250 million purchase by Samsung of its Mountain View campus from a San Francisco Bay Area developer in 2015.
  • Negotiated and closed multi-million dollar services agreements and software licenses with Dell, Motorola, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Broadcom, respectively.
  • Experimented with a corporate inversion from California to Cayman Islands through a reverse triangular merger to enable potential future listing on Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Taiwan Stock Exchange; closed US$20 million Series C Financing participated in by Intel Capital and Tudor Ventures in preparation for an IPO; assisted in the establishment of a double Irish structure to lower corporate tax.
